INTERSECTIONALITY & INCLUSIVENESS:
Our feminism is one in which intersectionality and inclusiveness meet. While we must be able to address the unique differences that set us apart and differentiate our lived experiences and how we are treated as we take up space in this world, we musn’t let those differences divide us to the point of not being able to collaborate, in dialogue and activism, in order to create the feminist future in which we are all due to benefit so immensely from.
EQUITY & JUSTICE:
Feminism has a number of different and, at times, contradictory definitions and connotations attached to it. For us, feminism is simply this... A movement that's working towards the equitable and just treatment of all human beings - socially, economically, judicially, and politically. One which, in turn, would allow all people to freely express themselves in whatever ways feel the most authentic to them, free of any preconceived stereotypes of how someone of their appearance, being, or background should act or think. We are all hurt in a society that pushes rigid norms, expectations and stereotypes upon us based on our appearance. A truly feminist future would allow us to be our truest selves, free from stigma and the threat of harm.
EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT:
As a platform for dialogue within the feminist space, our products and our content serve two distinct purposes. For those that are new to these conversations, are just beginning their journeys as feminists, and are realizing that they themselves have been or are a part of the problem in either behavior or thought patterns, our website is here to help educate, but not to judge. We’re not here to guess at intent. We believe that if you’re on our site, you have an earnest interest in bettering yourself and leading a happier and healthier life, for yourself and for those around you, as you sit with these conversations, listen, and grow. We’re happy to be a resource for you in your journey. For those of you that are all too familiar with these conversations because, sadly, you find yourself on receiving end of varying forms of discrimination and abuse due to these social biases that feminism looks to address, our platform hopes to serve as a place of empowerment. One in which we can help you better own your story and your voice. There’s not much we can teach you that you don’t already know and have already lived. Instead, we hope that our website and our products may help you feel a greater sense of pride and ownership in your hard-earned voice and visibility.
DIALOGUE & SAFETY:
While promoting free speech, Feminist Apparel is against hate speech in the service of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and any other form of bigotry and discrimination. If that's too difficult for you to follow, we invite you to hit the (x) on this tab and exit our site. For those of you still with us, welcome. Let's, kindly and respectfully, have some difficult conversations.
Pick up a shirt, talk to your friends about it, and know that you’re doing an invaluable service by calling out discriminatory attitudes in your community. Together, we are creating a growing mainstream movement towards a more inclusive, representative, and just world.
It's a movement that realizes the injustices and oppression that marginalized people face in their everyday lives and works to combat those issues. There are a lot of misconceptions about feminism, but our feminist ideology is simple, feminism is for human rights, respect, and inclusivity.
Feminist Apparel is an online storefront that offers exclusively products with feminist messaging and imagery. We don’t claim to be re-branding feminism or offering academic insight into the movement, we are an independent company that seeks to be the Feminism 101 shop for you and anyone that sees you wearing one of our shirts. We want our products to start conversations about intersectional feminism out in the real world and make people feel powerful and proud when they are wearing their feminist ideals right on their chest.
All of our designs are printed in our office here in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. The shirts themselves are sourced from a company called Gildan who employs ethical and environmentally conscious manufacturing practices and is 100% sweatshop free. Gildan facilities are WRAP certified: “WRAP is dedicated to ensuring lawful, humane and ethical manufacturing throughout the world.
In order to receive certification for facilities, they are regularly audited and must comply with the 12 WRAP principles. These relate to areas such as workplace regulations, child labour, hours of work, health and safety, discrimination and security.” They also produce garments that go up to 5XL & adhere to the codes of the Fair Labor Association (FLA), and they ask the same of external suppliers when used. Here is their Code of Ethics.
Our designs are either originally produced in-house or submitted to us by an incredible group of independent, feminist artists that we've invited to collaborate with us (you'll be able to find their name & more of their work in the product descriptions of the products that feature their designs).
All of the designs on our website follow a set of guidelines to ensure originality, inclusivity, and positivity.
We view our profits as a tool for further outreach, education, and activism. Every sale on our site allows us to continue to grow as an organization so that we can employ more people in our community, carry out our own team's feminist and volunteer projects, and help sponsor feminist programming across the globe.
Beginning in 2019, we're committing 10% of our net profits to a rotating coalition of feminist nonprofits. Find out more about our initiative here!
